Don’t let loneliness impact the senior you love

Posted

Loneliness is a significant issue affecting seniors who live alone, and its impact can be profound, influencing both mental and physical health. As individuals age, they may experience various life changes, such as the loss of a spouse, retirement, or relocation, which can lead to social isolation.

Joe was 86 years old when his wife passed away.  Joe felt isolated in his home and his social circle had diminished significantly when his daughter and son-in-law offered for him to move into their home.  It worked well in the beginning, but since both adults worked, his days were spent in front of the TV.  His daughter noticed that he was withdrawing and becoming less communicative.  He was seated in the same chair as when they left and many times had not eaten his lunch.

After working with a Senior Care Authority specialist Joe moved into an assisted living community.  Joe spent the first week in his apartment and didn’t venture out for meals or any of the activities.  His neighbor was successful in inviting him to breakfast, though Joe went to the dining room in sweatpants and tee shirt.  During breakfast he spotted a piano in the lounge and walked over and began playing.  Soon one of the female residents came over and stood by him as he played and complimented him on his skills.  Joe played for the next hour, and several other residents came to listen.   The next day Joe came down in dress slacks and a button-down shirt.   The lady who had joined Joe yesterday brought several of her friends along.  Joe played until lunch time, engaging the residents to join in by singing along.  The following days Joe exited his apartment in a sport coat, trousers and a pressed shirt.
