The month of May is a time of celebration, reflection, and gratitude. As spring reaches its full bloom, this month offers us meaningful opportunities to honor some of the most important people in our lives — the older adults in our communities.
May is recognized as Older Americans Month (OAM), a national observance led by the Administration for Community Living (ACL). It’s a time set aside to honor, recognize, and celebrate the contributions, resilience, and achievements of older adults. For 2025, the theme is “Flip the Script on Aging.” This empowering message challenges outdated stereotypes about growing older and celebrates the rich opportunities, wisdom, and purpose that come with age.
“Flip the Script on Aging” encourages everyone to reconsider what it means to age in today’s world. Older adults are business owners, volunteers, caregivers, mentors, and community leaders. By embracing their talents, experience, and potential, we can reshape societal perceptions and create more inclusive, supportive communities for people of all ages.
Throughout May, Friends Village will choose an activity and participate in events and activities that celebrate older Americans. From senior games to storytelling events, these activities foster meaningful connections and honor the diverse experiences of older adults.
This May, Friends Village will continue with our Yoga for Seniors classes that run twice a week, along with our Senior Planet classes that will be covering everything from Cloud Storage, Google Workspace, Google Drive, Google photos, and Smartphone Photography. On May 13 we are also running a very special presentation by Linda Polgar that explores the unique beauty, craftmanship, and cultural appreciation of Japanese Textiles.
As we celebrate Older Americans Month this May, let’s remember that aging is not just about adding years to life — it’s about adding life to years. By honoring the wisdom, resilience, and contributions of older adults, we affirm the vital role they play in shaping our communities, families, and futures. Together, let’s flip the script on aging, embrace new perspectives, and continue creating spaces where people of all ages feel valued, connected, and empowered.
Here’s to a month of celebration, meaningful connection, and gratitude for the incredible older adults who enrich our lives in countless ways.
